How Do Busy Moms Clean Their House With Kids

If you are a busy mom and you are reading this, you are probably feeling the biggest challenge is keeping your house clean with kids. You can spend hours getting it perfect and then the little mess makers are right behind you making it a mess again.

So what do you do?

Whether you are a busy mom, working mom, or stay at home mom, these busy mom cleaning hacks are just what you need to keep you house clean, even with kids!

Think Functionally

Make sure you have all of the needed cleaning supplies in the right places. It can be so frustrating and add extra time to your cleaning when what you need is not where it should be.

Keep cleaning supplies where you use them (even if that means buying duplicate of), rather than in a single location.

Less Dirt In Means Less To Clean

Have kids and guests remove their shoes prior to coming inside. Have a shoe rack or basket so your kids know exactly where their shoes and boots should go prior to coming inside.

Keep all sports gear and outdoor gear in the garage, shed or outside.

Make sure your kids take their clothes off in the garage or outside prior to coming in if they are filled with dirt, mud, chalk or paint.

Put a basket in the garage or outside by the door to put dirty clothes and sports uniforms in so they don’t get brought inside.

Have A Designated Drop Area

Kids need to know exactly where their stuff should go. Have a drop area for backpacks, coats, sweatshirts, shoes and lunches for after school. In the garage or right by the door entry is always a good place for a drop area. It doesn’t need to be fancy, command hooks on the wall make for perfect coat and backpack hangers.

Sports gear, sports uniforms, cleats all need a designated drop area so they just don’t get thrown somewhere for you to manage later. Less stuff, clothes, sports gear on the floor, less for you to have to clean and pick up.

Have a designated area for homework, school papers, art, water bottles, and lunches. Everything that is coming home in their backpack needs to have a designated place otherwise kids will just drop it anywhere they feel is a good spot.

Have a designated area for devices (iPads, Nintendo switch, phones), charging cords, and mail. Every day these items are used and often can get left all over the house or on the kitchen counter if you don’t have a designated place “home” for these items.

Use Time Saving & Helpful Products

As a busy mom, buying time saving products is one of my favorite cleaning hacks. There is no shame in spending a little extra money to save yourself hours of time, especially as a busy mom.

Buy multi-functional products. Instead of buying several different cleaners for the kitchen and bathrooms, buy one all-purpose cleaner that can be used in several different areas.

Here are some great Genius Mom Hack Cleaning Products:

Make use of multi-purpose cleaners – pick one product that can be used on multiple surfaces around the home, such as counters, floors, and bathroom fixtures.

A Robot vacuum is one of my favorite cleaning products. I use mine daily and it is worth its money in gold.

These Clorox wipes are bleach free and can clean multiple surfaces. Great for dusting, wiping down counters and cleaning faucets, all with one wipe. Hide Clorox wipes behind all of the toilets for a quick and easy bathroom clean.

Baby wipes are a must have!

Baby wipes can single handedly clean your entire house. Store baby wipes in drawers all over your house to help save time by quickly grabbing a wipe to clean counters, faucets, sticky hands, toys, faux plants, dirty hand-printed walls and much more.

Plus, safe for the whole family. Give your toddler or older child a baby wipe and ask them to clean the walls, baseboards, bathroom counters.

Don’t forget to have them in the car too and your snack bag!

Always have a bottle of Folex on hand for tough stains on your carpet like red wine, ketchup, and finger nail polish. This stuff is game changing when it comes to quickly cleaning a stain out of your carpet. Hands down the best and a must have with young kids.

For quick and easy dusting use Endust

Get Rid Of The Clutter

I’m not advocating a minimalistic lifestyle, but I will say the less stuff you have, the easier it will be to keep your house cleaned.

You probably hear this all the time, but it is so true. If you don’t purge or throw away anything, you are constantly wasting time moving the same stuff around your house from one place to the other.

The more kids you have the more stuff they bring in to your home. It can get out of control quick.

Start by Investing in good storage solutions – declutter by investing in boxes, baskets, and shelves that can store all your items in a neat and orderly fashion.

This will help make it easier to keep your house cleaned once it is organized. The bins do not need to be pretty or expensive. Having a clean and organized home will make you feel better then a fancy pretty container.

Use The Laundry Basket Pick Up Method

Declutter from one end of the house to the other using the laundry basket pick up method.  As you go from room to room, put away everything that actually belongs in that room and HAS A HOME (home = container, bin, or drawer), and put everything else into a laundry basket, and keep going.

Don’t over think it, don’t try to spend too much time in each room.

Have A Routine or Schedule

Create easy-to-follow cleaning schedules – set aside a few minutes each day or week to clean up so that you don’t feel overwhelmed when it comes to tidying up.

Get the worst part over first. If there is a particular area you hate cleaning, get it done first. Have several pick up time throughout the day of quick sprint cleaning, verses trying to schedule a long 2 hour cleaning time.

Do a quick daily bathroom wipe down.

Never leave a room empty handed. Anytime I am in my home I am constantly grabbing and picking things up off the floor or counters that don’t belong and putting them away.

Do similar cleaning items all at once. Clean all the floors on one day at the same time, clean all windows and mirrors at once, do all of the dusting at the same time. Do all of the deep cleaning tasks on one day.

Focusing on one item guarantees one item will get done each time, rather than bouncing around your house feeling like you didn’t get anything done.

Do one load of laundry and dishes each day.

Set A Timer

Cleaning can feel easier if you set a time to how long you will clean for. What you get done in that specified time is great.

If kids are home, call for “all hands on deck”. And everyone, kids included, go through the house and pick it up.

For stay-at-home moms, this is great for “transition” times throughout the day.

When transitioning from inside play to outside play, first set timer and do a quick pick up of the house.

If leaving the house for a play date or an errand, set the timer and do a quick pick up of the house.

Prior to starting dinner, set the timer and do a quick pick up of the house.

Make it fun. Kids love timers and making things a competition. Use strategies like “let’s see who can pick up the most blocks in 2 minutes. Ready, set go!”

Don’t Go To Bed with A Dirty House

Don’t start your next day with yesterday’s mess. Before going to bed have an evening routine, that includes picking up your house, starting a load of dishes and wiping down the counters.

Get The Kids Involved

Teach kids to help out around the house. A simple task of putting their dishes directly in to the dishwasher and not the sink or counter can help a ton. It doesn’t have to be huge cleaning items, a little can go a long way.

Toy Jail – Have a house rule. Teach your kids if they leave their toys on the floor when they are done playing with them, and you pick them up, they will go to “toy jail”.

This is a brilliant concept, I’ve used it for years. I love the concept of the kids having to help with chores to earn back the toy they lost.

Multi-Task Is A Great Busy Mom Cleaning Hack

Clean the bathroom while giving your kids a bath.

Clean the kitchen while waiting for the rice to cook.

Do the dishes while chatting with your kids as they eat their afternoon snack.
