Best Time-Saving Mom Hacks

Let’s dive in to some of the best mommy tips and best advice that help with time management, so you can get more done in less time.

1. Switch to online shopping for your grocery shopping.

As a busy mom of four young kids, with a set of twins, I made the switch years ago and it has been one of my biggest time saving hacks.

“According to the Time Use Institute, the average shopping trip takes 41 minutes. If you multiply that by the 1.5-trip per week average, that’s over 53 hours per year you’re spending in the grocery store.” (Source: CreditDonkey)

What would you do with an extra 53 hours per year?

Pro Tip: Instead of doing store pickup, choose delivery. You will save even more time not driving and waiting for your groceries to be brought out to you.

run robot vacuum daily

2. Run your robot vacuum every morning

I have been doing this for several years now and I am blown away how much time I SAVE cleaning my house less. I no longer use a push vacuum and because I run my robot vacuum daily, my floors always are clean and picked up.

It’s been the best habit for my little kids too. They have learned that toys need to be picked up off the floor for me to run the robot vacuum, so it automatically encourages toys being put away without me having to nag and remind them.

Pro tip: Use Toy Jail

I store a basket at the corner of our family room and the kids and I will quickly pick up the random toys and stuff on the floor and put in the basket. The kids know that the basket has to be cleaned by the end of the day or whatever is left in the basket is mine.

hide Clorox wipes behind your toilet for a quick clean. saves hours in deep cleaning.

3. Hide Clorox wipes behind every toilet to have cleaning your bathrooms take minutes verses hours

Every time you are in the bathroom to either help a child or use it yourself, grab a Clorox wipe and quickly wipe down the toilet, floor around the toilet. Grab a second one to quickly wipe down the counter and sink. This quick 30 second task when done consistently is game changing and will eliminate the constant need for deep cleaning.

Pro Tip: Rotate your bathrooms throughout your day and by the end of the day you will have easily and successfully cleaned every bathroom with very minimal effort.

4. Use mesh bags and have a daily laundry schedule

I don’t know of a single mom who loves laundry. The piles of endless laundry can feel so overwhelming. As well as the hunt for the missing sock. Seriously, where do they go?!

This is such a simple hack, but will save hours each week and eliminate the piles of laundry.

Start and complete one load of laundry each day.

Buy mesh bags for each person in your home and wash their socks individually to keep them together and make folding and putting away a thousand times easier.

Keep an empty laundry basket in each family member’s room for easy collection of dirty clothes.

Lastly, use shoe organizers to store kids’ clothes for the week.

5. Introduce Individual Play to get more done by having pockets of uninterrupted kid time

Sometimes the way to SAVE TIME as a busy mom with young kids, is to have focused time when your kids are not bothering you. It feels so impossible to get anything done with constant interruptions. You realized how true this is, when you have a few minutes to yourself to power through a task with no interruptions. It seriously feels like you have EXTRA time in your day.

So how do you get this? By introducing Individual Play. Individual what?!

This is a learned skill that benefits both the child and parent. It teaches your children, as young as 6+ months old, how to play independently without the need or interaction of an adult or another peer.

It is pure magic, and when done consistently can give you lots of pockets of time back in your day.

I personally, introduced Individual Play when my oldest was a little over one years old. I was pregnant with my second, due in just a few months and was worried that I would struggle balancing my time between two “babies”.

When my second was born my oldest was only 18 months.

I knew I needed a way for him to play independently so I could focus on the needs of a newborn, and get things done beyond just nap time and evening time.

I was shocked how successful this was.

So much so, I went on to teach my second born and then my twins when they were born just 2 years later.

Having 4 kids, all three and under was intense, but Individual Play was what held me together as a busy, overwhelmed mom of four “babies”.

And now it is something I am super passionate about and teach to other moms.

6. Meal Plan in Minutes – not hours

Is meal planning and food prepping an annoying task?

Yes.

But it honestly saves me HOURS each week as a busy mom, so every Sunday, I push through the annoying task and prep the food we are going to eat that week.

Why? Because I want to feel less stressed as a busy mom and food prepping does exactly that.

PLUS, saves you hours throughout your week.

I use my Sunday Reset Routine to plan out and prep the food for the week.

Meal planning & meal prepping allows me to get healthy nutritious meals on the table in minutes verses hours each week.

Some other meal hacks that are so helpful:

  • Double and triple your recipes
  • Invest in a meal delivery service

I always prep lots of fruits and veggies, which helps for my picky eaters.

And every week I usually have at least one slow cooker or Instant pot recipe so dinner take less effort.

Sunday Reset Routine saves you time and money

7. Have a Sunday Reset Routine to save time each week

This is a relatively new concept for me in the past few years, but has quickly become my favorite “must do” weekly tasks.

When done correctly, can save you a lot of time in your week as a busy mom with active schedules.

What is a Sunday Reset Routine?

It’s a day in your week (many often choose Sunday) that you complete several specific tasks to set your week up for success.

To head in to Monday (or the start of your week), prepared, ready and motivated.

car organization hacks and tips

Road Trip Car Hacks

  • Use car seat trash bags. I’ve been using these for a couple years now and wish I bought them way sooner.
  • Use a shower caddy as a snack holder in the car for road trips with kids.
  • Keep an emergency kit in your car with essentials like first aid supplies, snacks, water, jumper cables, etc.
  • Store an extra diaper bag in trunk with a change of clothes ready to go at all times
  • Create an “activity bag” filled with crayons, coloring books, stickers, etc., for keeping kids entertained while running errands or waiting at appointments.

Have kids help

No parent can do it all, and shouldn’t. I’ve been amazed how helpful even the littlest child can be.

Giving children age appropriate responsibilities can really help. Plus it creates a “team” environment in the family unit that goes well beyond the walls of home.

  • Create personalized chore charts using photos of household tasks assigned to each family member.
  • Set up a self-serve breakfast station and include milk in a squeeze bottle so toddlers and young kids can help themselves to breakfast.

I’ve used kid daily checklists for years and they really do make my day easier managing four little kids.

This kid daily checklist has helped eliminate the tantrums and crying I was experiencing each morning as I was trying to get four little kids up and out of the house.

Does this sound like your morning?

Do you desperately need a quiet morning where kids on their own knew what to do to get themselves out of the house on time and in PEACE?!

Don’t neglect the evening routine

While every parent is exhausted by the end of the day, reseting the kitchen and going to bed with a picked up home is so important.

I hate waking up the next day to yesterday’s mess. It’s the absolute worst!

I am always amazed how it only takes a few minutes but in my head the task is way harder and bigger then it really is.

  • A simple habit of running the dishwasher every evening is so helpful.

Lastly, minimize the amount of time you are on social media, especially right before bed.

You will be amazed how much extra time you will have back in your day. It will help so much for your mental state too.

We know this to be true, but creating these habits is easier said than done.
