Fall Family Photo Outfit Ideas
I love the tradition of taking annual family photos. We have taken family photos every single year since we started our family in 2013.
While planning and picking out the perfect outfit can feel like a daunting task, it is always worth it in the end.
In this blog post, we’ll share some ideas for your fall family photoshoot outfits that’ll make you look amazing, plus tips and hacks for taking family photos with young kids.
These tips are so good!
What should a family wear for Autumn pictures?
You need to decide if you want your family portraits to be more formal or casual. You want your pictures to reflect your family best.
Over the years I have done both formal and casual pictures, sometimes I base it on what kind of vibe I want my holiday cards to have for that year.
If I want a more traditional Christmas card, I will choose my color pallet and attire to reflect that. So more formal and more deep tones.
1. Where is the location of your photoshoot?
Before you can decide what to wear, you should consider the location where you will be taking your pictures.
Location will direct your clothing decision and options.
Will it be inside? Outside? Near water? pumpkin patch? Cold? In your backyard (convenient!!) or will you need to drive awhile?
While the photos are about your family, the background and landscape will set the vibe and mood which will impact the outfits you pick.
Formal, casual, trendy, nostalgic, or candid.
So now that you know your location and your fall vibe, let’s dive into picking out the outfits.
2. Start with a color scheme
What color to wear for fall family pictures?
Begin by choosing a color scheme for the entire family.
Top Tips For Choosing Your Color Scheme :
- It’s a good idea to go with neutral colors at the base and then add subtle pops of earthly tone colors to your liking.
- Incorporate subtle patterned prints to add dimension and texture to your beautiful family photos.
- For a more traditional fall theme select colors like gold, burgundy, beige, or olive green as they always pair well together, and make for beautiful Christmas cards.
- Bold colors like rich, earthy tones complement the autumn landscape.
- Deep jewel tones, warm neutral tones, and pops of burnt orange and rust can all be great options for a cozy and stylish fall family photo.
- Have one dominant color, that gives a pop
Below are some color palette ideas to get you started:
1. Ivory, tan, charcoal, and camel
2. navy blue, white, jean / light blue, and grey
3. rust, tan, sage green, and cream/ivory
4. Cream, rose pink, sage green, and navy blue
5. Navy blue, burnt orange, camel, and cream
6. Red, Green, Jean Blue, and cream
What to wear for fall family photos, especially if outdoors
When deciding what to wear for your fall family photo shoot, you want to make sure your family is dressed for the weather.
Now, depending on when you take your pictures, early fall verses late winter, temperatures can vary greatly.
The best thing is to plan your outfits around layers.
How do you coordinate fall family photo outfits?
- Don’t do Matchy Matchy.
- Remember your head to your toes.
- Start with one person first.
Pro Tip: I usually like to start with one outfit I love, and work all of the other outfits around my staple “inspirational piece”.
I have one daughter, so oftentimes I find a dress that I love and want my little girl to wear and then I will find the little boys and my outfit around her dress.
This family photo shoot is an example of that. I loved my daughters’ dress and went from there.
3. Layers are your friend
Fall is known for its chilly weather, and layers will help your family stay warm.
Not only that, but they offer some depth to your photos.
You can pair a sweater with a denim jacket and a scarf for warmth that looks cozy and stylish. Layering clothing pieces is also a great way to mix and match fall colors.
Here are several great clothing options that can be layered for an outdoor fall family photoshoot:
- Sweater dress
- Long-sleeved maxi flowy dress (floral print or patterned for the pop of texture)
- Jeans
- Tan pants
- Long-sleeved tee
- Flowy blouse
- Cardigan or sweater
- Denim jacket
- Leather jacket
- Scarf
- Beanie
- Boots
- Sneakers
4. Say yes to boots
Boots are a staple during the fall season. Selecting the right pair will make your outfit look more polished and stylish.
You can choose a pair with heels, or knee-high boots, or opt for something more relaxed like flat boots.
Try to select boots that have a comfortable sole since you will most likely be walking around and standing for a while.
5. Accessorize smartly
Accessorizing is a great way to add some flair to your family’s outfits.
A cute hat, scarf, or chunky necklace can elevate a simple outfit.
You can also coordinate your accessories with your family’s outfits. For example, if your daughter is wearing a red dress, include a red scarf to tie in the color.
6. Keep it simple
You might feel the urge to select busy patterns that are trending and fashionable styles, but you’d be better off keeping it simple.
Solid colors are safe, even a simple cream or ivory shirt is often the best way to go.
Simple outfits can highlight your family’s natural beauty and personalities.
What to avoid for fall family photos
When it comes to fall photos, it’s best to skip these things:
- Bright or neon colors that are typically associated with summer and spring
- Baggy clothes
- Too busy patterns
- Bright white (shirt)
- Baseball cap
- Uncomfortable shoesble
Outdoor Fall Family Photo Outfits List
Below are our favorite looks for a stunning outdoor family photo session. We love the mix of neutrals with subtle pops of earth tones and stunning fall-inspired prints and patterns.
Dressy Classy Timeless look:
This was by far one of my favorite family fall photoshoot.
For a more dressy and timeless look, black, a pop of gold (little girls dress, mom & daughter’s shoes, little boy bowtie and big boy tie) and white. This look is classic, makes for very nice Christmas cards and look amazing hung on your hallway wall collage in your home.
Hallway Wall Gallery
If you are looking for the perfect hallway wall gallery, this classic look makes for the best gallery (IMO).
I wanted a clean classic look for my hallway gallery so I didn’t feel compelled to want to constantly change the pictures.
Floral flowy dress
A long floral flowy dress always photographs so well for fall family pictures. Add a pop of contrasting color like this mustard yellow on the baby with solid grey and greens. While my family tends to have our little boys wear jean pants, I love the tan pants look.
The Perfect Blend:
I love this look for fall family photos. The perfect blend of pattern, floral and solids. I’ve taken several family photos over the year, and I loved how the colors and patterns turned out. Especially my daughter’s dress, the lace burnt orange dress added the pop and texture that was needed.
Neutral Colors look:
For a casual neutral look. These colors always complement the fall landscape and make for great family photos. Don’t forget you can always add in floral or a pattern to give more texture.
Bonus Tip: Hire a Professional Photographer
I am a big proponent of hiring a photographer to capture these moments for us every year. Mamas are usually behind the camera, so it is nice to be able to get the whole family in photos together.
Plus, most family photographers are experts at getting strong-willed kiddos to smile for the camera, and to get crazy boys to sit for a few minutes. With four kids, 3 which are boys, our photographer is working hard!
Our family truly treasures these photos!
I always use the photos on my home hallway wall collages and will often give the photos as gifts for grandparents, which they absolutely love!
Navy Blue, Pop of Yellow, Cream & Subtle Patterns
I love all of the complementing blends of subtle patterns and colors.
Rich Tones and Patterns Blended
Did I mention that velvet is such a fun and beautiful texture to add to your fall family photos?
Velvet deep blue, cream, tan and brown, with the perfect baby beanie accessory has this photo screaming perfection!
Forest Green, Cream & Burgundy (Don’t forget the plaid)
You can never go wrong with traditional Christmas colors for your fall family pictures.
How to Take Family Photos Yourself
If your budget this Fall season does not afford you hiring a professional photographer, don’t let that stop you from taking memorable good quality photos.
Borrow or buy an inexpensive phone tripod and follow these top 10 tips to take great photos. One of the easiest ways to capture great pictures without requiring perfect smiles and everyone looking at the camera, is doing this candid look.
With four kids all 5 and under in this picture, it felt capturing everyone smiling felt impossible. Our photographer captured this shot and I couldn’t love it more. Kids love to run and this photo captures life with young kids perfectly!
Pop of Mustard Yellow and Grey
How beautiful is this backdrop and picture?! Adding a staple pop color, like they did with this mustard yellow is such a great statement for family fall photos.
Stripes, Plaid, Burgundy, Jean & Navy Blue
Jean jackets are a great layering piece for fall pictures. Add dimension and complement almost every look. Men in v-neck sweaters also give a layering option.
Rust Orange and Stripes or Pattern
A pop of Rust Orange gives such a great fall vibe. Adding stripes or a pattern is the best complement to the vibrant Rust color.
Stripes, Plaid & Navy Blue
I’m going way back when our family was just two little boys. My earrings had orange and teal complementing both of the little boys.
Neutrals, Grey & Cream
The golden hour is what makes your pictures look dreamy and magical. Keeping to simple and neutral colors allows for this beautiful look.
Jean, Rust Orange & Cream
Precious cream or ivory dress, soft rust (or a deep Rose color) and jean dress combo is stunning.

Best Tips & Hacks for taking family photos with small and young children
While the results are always so worth it, taking family photos with small and young children can be very challenging! Use these tips to make your next photoshoot a success.
- Choose a location that is safe and comfortable for your little ones, such as a park or your backyard.
- Dress everyone in coordinating and comfortable fall outfits.
- Bring some snacks and toys to keep the kids entertained and happy.
- Have Tik Tac’s for bribery. They are quick to dissolve and don’t show in pictures. Work like magic!
